How Acupuncture supports acne
Acupuncture and Acne
What is acne?
Acne vulgaris is a chronic and limiting inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands that occurs in adolescents and sometimes adulthood. Acne is related to the gonad endocrine function. Once this becomes dysregulated, chronic recurrent inflammation in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands can lead to acne, pimples, nodules, or cysts.
How does acupuncture help?
Studies have shown that acupuncture can influence white blood cell (WBC) count. One study found that acupuncture increased the WBC count of patients after chemotherapy which improved clinical effectiveness (PMID: 36281119). Another study noted that WBC values changed before and after acupuncture treatment (PMCID: PMC7440346).
How does a high WBC count help?
A healthy WBC count is essential for overall immune function, which indirectly supports the body's ability to fight infections and inflammation, both of which contribute to acne. Increasing WBC count can be beneficial for managing acne by strengthening the body's immune system and potentially helping to resolve acne flare-ups more quickly.
