How Acupuncture supports Psoriasis
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition characterized by thick, scaly, red patches on the skin. These red, raised patches or plaques are usually covered with silvery scales, often on the knees, elbows, scalp, and lower back, but can appear anywhere on the body. These patches can be itchy, dry, and painful.
Although the exact cause of psoriasis is not yet fully understood, it is thought to result from an overactive immune system that speeds up skin cell growth, causing them to pile up on the skin surface.
How does acupuncture help?
An overview of systematic reviews conducted in 2021 noted that a growing number of experts have acknowledge the advantages of acupuncture in the treatment of psoriasis, particularly with alleviating symptoms (PMID: 32610023).
Studies suggest acupuncture can effectively reduce thickness, scales of the lesions and skin itching with fewer side effects (PMID: 34763442). Likewise, multiple studies have suggested acupuncture helps reduce stress and anxiety which are possible triggers of psoriasis (PMID:34388561).
At Alchemy Acupuncture Studio we combine acupuncture with other treatments to amplify therapeutic results. Regarding psoriasis, we combine acupuncture with Dermalux LED light therapy as this device has been medically certified to treat psoriasis by reducing inflammation and accelerating the body’s natural healing process for normalised cell turnover.
