Acupuncture relieves pain by:

Acupuncture relieves pain by:

  • Stimulating sensory nerves which reduce pain signals to the brain.

  • Triggering the release of endogenous opioids which blocks pain signalling to the brain.

  • Influencing neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, to suppress, modulate and inhibit pain signals.

  • Stimulating the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis to reduce inflammation.

  • Altering areas of the brain associated with pain such as the thalamus (as shown in Functional MRI’s).

  • Improving microcirculation and tissue healing by increasing nitric oxide and reducing muscle tension.
