Acupuncture is a complementary therapy that involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points on the body to promote healing. Acupuncture is a part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which is an ancient healing system that has been practiced for thousands of years. TCM is based on the concept of Qi or Energy and the balance of Yin and Yang in the body. The acupuncture needles help clear blockages leading to a balance of Yin and Yang and help with the free flow of Qi resulting in health and wellness.
If this explanation is a little too alternative for you, acupuncture can be understood from a more conventional perspective. For example, when acupuncture needles are inserted into the body, the natural healing response is stimulated which reduces inflammation, enhances immune function and improves circulation. Increased circulation promotes local blood flow which delivers oxygen and nutrients throughout the body while also removing waste products. Likewise, the stimulation of nerves, muscles, and connective tissue helps release endorphins (the body’s natural painkiller) and serotonin and dopamine (natural chemicals influencing mood and stress).
Due to the positive effects of acupuncture, it has been used to treat a variety of conditions such as pain, stress, mental health concerns, digestive disorders, chronic illness, hormonal conditions and many more.
I hope this blog has helped you get a clearer picture of what acupuncture is and how it works in the body.
